16 Jan:
New search: T
hyssen K52S (filler metal), ER 70S-6.

ER70S6 wire conforms to the AWS A5.18 specification. The designations are as follows: ER indicates filler metal may be used as either an electrode or rod. 70 indicates in 1000 psi increments the minimum tensile strength of the weld metal produced by the electrode when tested according to the specification. In this case, 70 indicates 70,000 psi. S indicates that the filler metal wire is solid. 6 indicates the chemical composition of the solid filler metal wire. This wire has a Charpy V Notch impact property of -29 C.

And finally Kumar showed us the basics of Abaqus. Maybe Fiza and I were a little bored but at least that meant we knew the basics already after having explored earlier. And we saw the simulation of the stress/strain distribution in a pipeline.

We also did a stress/strain model of a cantilever beam, fixed on one end.

17 Jan:
To study the stress/strain distribution in a dumbbell shape tensile specimen upon loading.

The dumbbell tensile specimen has specific dimensions and Kumar showed how to get the details by going to ASTM website through NTU database. ASTM stands for
American Society for Testing and Materials.

Spent the 1,2 hours after that gogglling on dumbbell tensile specimen and information on tensile testing. It's high time I revise on year one work... those stuffs on engineering stress/strain, true stress/strain, Hooke's law etc. Argh!

The dumbbell shape is a whole new geometry to us, but anyway we still managed to model out the geometry before it's time to pack up and go.

18 Jan:
Completed the modeling of the dumbbell tensile specimen.

That's how it looks like... you can see that when the left end is fixed, upon tensile loading, the right end elongates. The shadowy part on the right was the initial shape of the model, thus we get to see the displacement clearly on this image. Also, the red colour on the model indicates the most stressful part (haha I'm stressed too). Apparently it's consistent with true experimental results.

And so we've reached the end of week two. Great.
