Mr Yong in green. What a joyous fellow...

they were releasing the biggest catch of the day... erm cannot see no fish la, can only see the big ripple.

the man on the yellow kayak was untying the nets to let the fishes out...

Zhi Xiong posing leh...

oh.. and the red one was his catch. the smaller one was caught by Sim... dunno who he, but he left the same week as the ntu students completed IA. haha so nvm.

IA officially over!
Sunday, June 08, 2008

have been enjoying myself for the past few days...

wednesday, being the last day of IA (cos I took leave for the next 2 days), went bowling with the company people. they have this weekly bowling session every wednesday mah... $1 per game only. so went lor... and came back with aching thighs and arms. haha.

and I rode a motorbike for the first time!! so cool... so scary. Fiza and Gerard kept laughing when I was getting onto the bike lor, and Yan Sheng was mocking at me for acting tensed... how could he compare me with some other female passenger eating ice-cream on the bike right? lol.

I like dunno where to put my hands lor... no where to hold onto. So he said if anything, just press the legs against his... hahaha cos that's how lor. whatever. I enjoyed the ride back home though, cos at night the traffic was smoother and the wind was just blowing and blowing and so nice~

however, I still remain that it's dangerous riding a motorbike. cos you are just exposing yourself lor... and you are merely protected by a helmet? omg.

thursday went back to school for the Lab Safety briefing required before we can start using the labs for our FYPs. I'm gonna be attached to the AMRC - Advanced Materials Research Centre. can't wait to start working in the lab... though it's gonna be stressful cos need to observe so many safety rules and so many regulations and procedures to remember. I'm afraid I'd be forgetful and all.

felt so good to be back at school... and went Fu's hall to help bring back some of my stuffs cos he's clearing his room. had lunch at Can 14, walked 1 round at JP and another round at Lot1. bought a black stocking. lol... cos going to cousin's wedding dinner tomorrow, so just buy to see if it suits my beige/white dress.

we went to my house, he made orange squash while I helped my mum to clean the bamboo leaves for wrapping dumplings. it didn't feel like a thursday... more like a saturday. guess I'm too used to the boring working hours now. gonna revert back everything and continue playing for this holidays and of cos work hard when I start on my FYP soon when Dr Gan comes back from his vacation to brief us.

In just a turn of the eye, I'm gonne be year 4 liao la... omg. the class schedule for next sem and list of electives are out liao... tried to plan and see how, only to realise I'm gonna be fighting for time and it's gonna be sian to choose the MPE(Major Prescribed Electives)s cos most of them available next sem are not my interest.

friday stayed at home and wrapped dumplings lor. this time round I didn't feel as tired as I did the past years. cos I took shorter time to wrap each dumpling. haha... cos I realised a mistake in my wrapping style lor which explained why my dumplings somtimes came loose. maybe next year I can learn how to fry all(maybe some) of the ingredients (:

yesterday, I went to the company's Family Day event at Pasir Ris Town Park - fishing cum games etc. but the weather spoilt everything... it began to drizzle when Fiza, Gerard and I reached the MRT station. And by the time we got to the shelter... it was pouring. somemore they had chosen a site on lower grounds... and with the continuous rain, it began to flood! we could really see the water level rising lor... lol. shall upload the pics in the next post. and insects like centipedes and spiders appeared from everywhere...

oh and I managed to cast the fishing line a few times... interesting leh! feel like going to try fishing liao, or maybe should start prawning first. think my dad still has his fishing rods and stuffs from his old past-time. jeez, someone jio me to fish leh. Fu, I know you ok de. ^^

was tired after that... and not forgetting I was lugging the doorgifts, both mine and Fiza's. cos she went off to catch the flight to Indonesia for her holiday lor. otherwise I would have gone to Tampines Mall & Century Sq to begin my GSS shopping. hahaha... I'm desperate for shopping now! ugh. and gotta ask dear friends out for some dates...

I wanna watch Kungfu Panda! =D

Week 10 over
Saturday, March 15, 2008

LXH is visiting us next monday, so instead of 4 entires, i have to write 1 more entry for week 9 and 10 lor. but i managed to finish it yesterday in office. because i didn't want to have to do during the weekends... wanna nuah, wanna meet Fu.

10 out of 22 weeks over already. so it's about time to start on the final IA report due on week 20. sigh, i hate internship. i mean why do we still need to write report de... cannot just have the evaluation and oral interview meh? zzz

i kinda like the cold cold weather for the last couple of days, although i didn't think the rain was a pretty thing. the hammies almost like hibernating lor... slept all day long, didn't see them on the wheel either. because of the heavy downpour on wed that i had to postpone tuition to yesterday. all because there was the FYP briefing on thur - which reminds me -so pissed lah, it ended barely a minute after Fizah and I went into the LT29!

why? because we forgot to leave office earlier, couldn't squeeze onto the first train at buono vista, the 179 at boonlay took almost 15 minutes to come, the traffic was slow as expected cos of the rain and it was our first time to LT29 so had to locate it.

and - all info may be found online, as usual la... that's why i didn't go for the IA briefing lor. except 1 thing he said "that some profs have already pasted their list of FYPs on their doors". something that prompted Fizah and I to go from south spine to n4.1 only to discover along with some others with the same mentality, that the door to the staff room was now locked and only available to those with access card. piang eh, since when? i don't remember last time got leh.....

but the good thing was Fu met me at Can A for dinner then i went home lor. at least not totally wasted and luckily i got concession ah... otherwise i sure would have cursed more.

Takeaway NTU food
Tuesday, February 05, 2008

Just had lunch, food was from NTU, cos I went to borrow some books for Dr K. It wasn't as bad as I had thought to go run errand on my own, cos Dr K. gave fiza some work so she couldn't accompany me lor. But it meant I had to fork out the cab fare first before the company reimburse me. That is something I disagree with, can they find a better way cos few weeks back I just spent $23 on cab for the same reason. And today's fare was $24.60. Ugh. I'm gonna declare I'm broke soon lah...

cheeky my
-- see her hand there

fiza couldn't wait to feast... my looking so bright at the good old jap food.

Introducing...
Monday, January 28, 2008

Hafizah, and

Ming Yong.

Hafizah (Fiza for short) and Ming Yong are my fellow MSE friends at DnV. Fiza sits next to me in the Materials & Corrosion Lab where it's a little haven for us, if not for the occasion visitors. Haha... Time pass faster with her around; the person whom I will always chit chat and do small small tasks given by Kumar with. PS: I know I haven't officially introduce who Kumar is, but I guess it's not important, at least he's not important here in my blog. Lol. Ya, he's my direct supervisor, but maybe all of us would have preferred answering to the bigger boss instead coz he seems nicer.

And Ming Yong is the other MSE girl at DnV, she's attached to the Materials Technology Lab..... doing polishing. Oops, not to mean in a bad way, just that her scope is more into the material metallurgy and especially for metallic materials, you gotta polish them before you can see the topography etc under the microscope ma. This is what I understand for now la. But I dare say (hopefully) her duties will be more diverse with the passing weeks... with new projects coming in and her skill improves.

As for myself, I don't have much to say leh... Beginning of 4th week already, and I still feel detached. Abaqus software also don't know how to use, also got problem using Excel to do those calculations and graph (in their way).

I like to do polishing... beats sitting in front of the pc the whole day.

Fiza: 2 weeks down.
Saturday, January 19, 2008

16 Jan:
New search: T
hyssen K52S (filler metal), ER 70S-6.

ER70S6 wire conforms to the AWS A5.18 specification. The designations are as follows: ER indicates filler metal may be used as either an electrode or rod. 70 indicates in 1000 psi increments the minimum tensile strength of the weld metal produced by the electrode when tested according to the specification. In this case, 70 indicates 70,000 psi. S indicates that the filler metal wire is solid. 6 indicates the chemical composition of the solid filler metal wire. This wire has a Charpy V Notch impact property of -29 C.

And finally Kumar showed us the basics of Abaqus. Maybe Fiza and I were a little bored but at least that meant we knew the basics already after having explored earlier. And we saw the simulation of the stress/strain distribution in a pipeline.

We also did a stress/strain model of a cantilever beam, fixed on one end.

17 Jan:
To study the stress/strain distribution in a dumbbell shape tensile specimen upon loading.

The dumbbell tensile specimen has specific dimensions and Kumar showed how to get the details by going to ASTM website through NTU database. ASTM stands for
American Society for Testing and Materials.

Spent the 1,2 hours after that gogglling on dumbbell tensile specimen and information on tensile testing. It's high time I revise on year one work... those stuffs on engineering stress/strain, true stress/strain, Hooke's law etc. Argh!

The dumbbell shape is a whole new geometry to us, but anyway we still managed to model out the geometry before it's time to pack up and go.

18 Jan:
Completed the modeling of the dumbbell tensile specimen.

That's how it looks like... you can see that when the left end is fixed, upon tensile loading, the right end elongates. The shadowy part on the right was the initial shape of the model, thus we get to see the displacement clearly on this image. Also, the red colour on the model indicates the most stressful part (haha I'm stressed too). Apparently it's consistent with true experimental results.

And so we've reached the end of week two. Great.

After 7 days at DnV
Wednesday, January 16, 2008

Most of the time was slacking...

7 Jan: Kumar briefly, and very briefing tell us what we can expect. He gave us some materials to browse through too...

1) Fracture Mechanics
worked examples by
John Knott & Paul Withey

2) ABAQUS INSIGHTS
FEB/MAR 06

3) ABAQUS INSIGHTS
OCT 07

8 Jan: Kumar gave us more materials, namely reports to read...

1) Fitness-for-Service Assessment of
TGI (Transportasi Gas Indonesia)
Submarine Pipeline with Buckle Damages
KP 110 to KP 135
Kuala Tungkal to Panaran

2) Sarawak Shell Berhad
Detailed Design of
F13E(SC)DR-A Platform & Pipelines
28" Pipeline Spanning Design Report

9 Jan: Fiza and I explored the software Abaqus today.

ps: font thus small becoz I don't reckon you will want to read.

Abaqus is a suite of powerful engineering simulation programs, based on the finite element method, that can solve problems ranging from relatively simple linear analyses to the most challenging nonlinear simulations. Abaqus contains an extensive library of elements that can model virtually any geometry. It has an equally extensive list of material models that can simulate the behavior of most typical engineering materials including metals, rubber, polymers, composites, reinforced concrete, crushable and resilient foams, and geotechnical materials such as soils and rock. Designed as a general-purpose simulation tool, Abaqus can be used to study more than just structural (stress/displacement) problems. It can simulate problems in such diverse areas as heat transfer, mass diffusion, thermal management of electrical components (coupled thermal-electrical analyses), acoustics, soil mechanics (coupled pore fluid-stress analyses), and piezoelectric analysis.

Abaqus offers a wide range of capabilities for simulation of linear and nonlinear applications. Problems with multiple components are modeled by associating the geometry defining each component with the appropriate material models and specifying component interactions. In a nonlinear analysis Abaqus automatically chooses appropriate load increments and convergence tolerances and continually adjusts them during the analysis to ensure that an accurate solution is obtained efficiently.

I was kinda whiny coz Yen Sen said it's mechanical stuffs. Upsets me to know that coz firstly, I'm NOT from mae and secondly, he said he learnt FEA (finite element analysis) which is related to the software in mae.

But nonetheless, it was still considered fun to try out the software on our own. We did two guided examples of creating a model of an overhead hoist and a connecting lug.

For the first one, we could see the effect of the downward force on the truss.

For the lug, upon simulating uniform pressure applied at the hole... we could subsequently see the stress contour plot as follows... cool huh.
10 Jan: We spent the morning on Abaqus as we did not managed to save our work the day before and the application closed on its own. We got a bit sian of Abaqus after trying to move on the our third example and that was when Kumar came along to gave us our task of the day - to research on "fatigue crack growth rate in 622 welds".

11 Jan: More on fatigue crack growth rate... welding consumable... welding wire. No luck on 622 welds, found more on Inconel 625 and other 700 series.

14 Jan: New things to research on...
- Fracture arrest in pipeline
- Leaking pipeline (relations to pressure/pressure profile/pressure reduction)

The "best thing" was Kumar came by to see our progress at about 4.45pm (half an hour to knock off time) and stunned us with "you can go NTU to borrow the book, take taxi, you wanna go now, ya ya you can claim taxi"... what was he doing the hours before that? Alright, I should give him the benefit of the doubt that he was busy with his reports huh. Anyway, Fiza and I did not go back to NTU of coz, we went home.

15 Jan: I didn't finish the previous story, we met in the morning at NTU Library 2 the following day, which is this date. And cab back to DnV. Guess how much was the fare? A whole $23!! 18km from NTU to DnV, $17 for the ride, $6 was the 35% peak hour charge...

The morning passed by in a blink coz when we settled down it was about 10am already. Kumar handed us another report to look through when we passed him the book we borrowed...

1) Technical Report
ConocoPhillips
Indonesia Inc. Ltd
Engineering Critical Assessment (ECA) of
Longitudinal Seam Weld Flaws in
24" OD x 13.8mm WT Pipeline

24" Belanak to Hang Tuah
Gas Export Pipeline

I think we didn't look through the report at all coz we spent the afternoon on polishing. Haha actually we just went to level 2 to see how Ming Yong was doing. Cedric was showing her how to mount a sample using epoxy resin or something, and how to polish the sample for testing. So we joined her coz it was something new to us. There are several grits for the sandpaper; 120, 240, 400, 600, 800, 1200. The lower the number, the rougher the sandpaper. The end result: a piece of dull carbon steel/stainless steel will become shiny as a mirror.

I'm feeling sian ah.... coz I don't like mechanics, anything mathematics and calculations. Wonder what I'm gonna write for the first entry of my fortnightly report. Zzz...

Hello to you blogger
Saturday, January 12, 2008

Hi.

A note of welcome back to all.

Had been hibernating for the past three months. Which was why I locked my blog so no one would have to come and comment why no entry. Haha. Hope to have more entires this year ba... Oh ya, and I need to blog an entry on the happenings in 2007 and the things I would want to achieve or experience in 2008. Will do so by end of this month ba.

A quick update of what I'm busy with now. Well, I'm definitely not busy as yet, just currently serving attachment at Det Norske Veritas (DNV) which will be ongoing for 22 weeks. So already one week has already passed, 21 more weeks to go...

This is the first weekend and it was back to old times when i met Fu today at JE. We spent the early afternoon at the Popular outlet at the JE mrt station and then to IMM, browsing for assessment books for Meiyi. Yup, I had my first lesson with her on 8th Jan which was coincidentally the same date as my first lesson with her last year. So she's my only tutee for now, and I expect so for the whole of 2008. Coz don't intend to burden myself as I can see Year 4 approaching liao... which equates to FYP and loads of unforseen stuffs to busy myself with then.

IMM is becoming to look like a typical shopping centre, with all the new eateries like that of Lot1 or even Takashimaya and shops such as Minitoons and Comics Connection. Gone is the old exhibition venue with only furniture stores and wedding gowns boutiques. Hmmm... changes are inevitable har.

We went back to my house and it was the usual weekly inspection of our dear hammies by Mr Teo. Haha. Well, no choice coz I still find it hard to hold them comfortably and it's quite sad for them to be contained in their tank and cage only. So, I'm thinking of getting a hamster ball for them to roll around in. That will be fun. ^-^ But I will need to wait till pay day... coz running low in the monetary reserves. Lol. Previous two months no income mah, what to do.

There are many things I wanna get, but if I'm made to write down now, I probably cannot pen down more than 3. But at least I've bought a new pink ankle socks today coz now go work in sneakers so need socks, unlike going to school when I would just wear flip flops. Next time when I go work, I hope I can wear heels hahaha... Does this mean I'm not gonna be an enginner?

Whatever.
