Went Bugis on saturday with dear to shop for formal attire cos his IA requires him to wear so. Nothing from BHG seemed perfect enough, and the outside shops in Bugis Junction also not suitable enough. Finally found one at G2000 which fitted him perfectly... it kinda glowed on him haha. Navy-silver stripes; can be worn casually with jeans too and it's 100% cotton which is definitely worth the buy cos more airy mah :) and it's on sale for $29.90 what a steal!

After shopping, I was dead-hungry cos I skipped breakfast. Maybe Bugis Junction has alot of restaurants and stuffs but didn't feel like eating those nydc or MOF. The food court also not appealing cos not worthit to spend $$ at food court in town too expensive. So we decided to venture further, maybe eat at Iluma or the QQ noodle house. Wah, we walked until Iluma thinking nvm see outside one of those places on the BK-LJS-KFC row of shops got things to eat a not.

Then we u-turned right outside Iluma leh... lol. By-passed QQ noodle house too. Walked all the to the OG Albert there also nothing to eat like that, the nearby hawker centre reopened liao but so many people la. Ok lor, walked somemore Bencoolen liao so we just settled at the coffeeshop outside OG. Ok la, not too bad since I was hungry and sg food still the best.

咖喱鸡面 & 烧鸭面 for $6.50

After lunch, we each still bought the $1 ice cream from the bike-cart uncle-aunitie haha... nice to eat on a sunny afternoon. And we headed over to Burlington Sq there the Shine Korean Supermarket to buy some korean ingredients and stuffs. Whenever I'm at Bugis with dear, we'll always usually go there to see see one. Cos I really like good korean food, love the stir-fry meat and the stews lor. Yum! So in case you wanna go there have a look or like me, to get some things korean =p here's the address:

175 Bencoolen Street,
#01-10/11 Burlington Square,
Singapore 189649
Tel: 62388897

Dear paid for everything yea so happy. We went back to my home straight after this cos we wanted to keep the Kimchi fresh. So in the end we didn't go back to Iluma also la haha. No shopping for me also :( cny coming so it's time to shop shop again. Machiam eveytime around my birthday I will keep going back to Bugis cos I need to shop for cny clothes lol.

1. Korean Vemicelli 당면300g $4.50 - he knows I like to eat glass noodles and now I can have it inside my stew or steamboat also can haha

2. Lotte Apple Squeeze 사과 스퀴즈 250g $0.80 - btw do you know that their pronounication of apple "sa gua" and apology is the same? that's why you always see them throwing apples around when they wanna apologise to someone haha

3. Pork Bulgogi Sauce 돼지 불고기 양념 840g $6.80 - special marinade for their meats well cos I can't eat beef so I got the pork one but who says I can't use it for chicken meat haha. and i'm gonna make Bulgogi stew someday soon...

4. Cabbage Kimchi 배추 김치 400g $5.30 - you get to eat this even when you order korean set at food courts... but not eveytime nice right cos I think the "china stallholders" made themselves or they got the "china made" ones haha... and I tell you the authentic ones taste really much better. I ate this straight out of the fridge and it's so crunchy and not too spicy too ^-^

Hmmm... since I tpyed so long liao, the next section shall just be short. If I can keep it short and not start to grumble la haha. So I went to the SIA walk-in interview yesterday, Kangtai and I were early. Not early like those we reached 6+ or 7am but we reached around 7.45am or so. It's good not to be so kiasu cos I hate to see people or be one of those who start queuing right away. Haha, we saw people who "scare" themselves by queuing up out of no where and everyone at the back started doing so, only we and those who were seated kept their composure and stayed where we were. Around 8.10am the staff called us to be in the line and wah I tell you everyone chiong lor... you know why cos those who thought they were already queuing hor (mostly girls) were hogging the guys line la... so they chiong to the front of "cross under" the separator lor so unglam. But well, very singaporean.

So the front of the ladies line damn fat can... cos all cramped there want to faster faster. It's not even a queue la, more like like the starting line of a marathon haha. We stood there until maybe 8.30am then the staff started to check and collect our application forms in batches. So there were 10 in one group and we were brought inside a ballroom so be seated 10 in a row in our fixed group. Kangtai was in group 4 I think and I was in group 6. We were shown a SIA video which kept repeating and we waited. By the time my group left the ballroom, I think there was 20 over groups in the ballroom already.

We were brought to another holding area as we waited for our group interview. Damn, there was still a long snake of wanabees out there. So I estimate maybe few hundreds by then lor... and that was around 9.30am only. Imagine even if they weren't gonna allow people in by 2pm, I think already break 1000wanabees lol. I was unlucky no.1 of the group... serious. I'm not trying... ok well maybe I'm finding an excuse la but first person really no time to think. Arbo my response not quick enough lor. Actually I expected the first round to be self-intro + answer the question posted to the 10 of us.

There were two interviewers; one an aunite in forties or so, the other could be late twenties or thirties. I don't think they were make-up haha... anyway the younger greeted us with this "Good morning ladies, I will ask each of you a question and you will answer the question one by one. Ok, if there is one thing can change, what would be be?" Then she looked at me. OMG. I totally freaked out... I think. Cos I'm thinking "hey what happend to the self-intro?", "should I self-intro?", "oh no, am I supposed to start talking now?". Ya and I blew it... I really should have intro-ed instead of starting if there'r one thing I could change, it would be.... so boring. And better yet, a girl from a previous group came into the room without warning and interrupted my speech.

You know why. Cos she wanted to know why she didn't get it! I guess it was really bad cos her presence somehow affected most of us ba, I mean surely we were kaypos in our minds wanting to know why also haha. Then she stared to "is it my specs" or "is it what I wear"... to which the older interviewer commented "can't you see we're in the middle of an interview". Ooops throw face can. Want to ask also choose a better time, when we leaving the room mah. So imagine how hard for me to carry on cos I really mind blank after that. Anyway with my kind of speech I expected to be out liao. Come to think of it I think they were looking for maturity in responses ba. I don't know la but I feel this SIA interview no matter which round, luck is very crucial because the interviewers change all the time and the questions too.

Two in group managed to move onto the next round. And they were the 8th and 10th in the group; so I was rather adamant in believing that one would be slightly advantaged if they were behind in the queue in the group. And the last candidate did gave a self-intro while the 8th girl was really fluent in her speech. It wasn't even 10am when it was all over... damn fast la if you compare to the don't know how many hours of waiting time on average it was previously. But I think they changed the procedures this time also cos there was no checking of documents, no height and weight measurement nor any tiptoeing to touch the tape on the wall.

I was surprised I wasn't as downcasted as I had thought I would be. In fact, I felt numb although it was just my first try. Perhaps it was the talking I've had with some of the girls and the grumblings we made. I made two friends from my group :) and we were out together :( but it's nice to have company home on the mrt train haha. I didn't manage to get Kailyn's number but I got Sheryl's. We agreed to go to the next SIA interview together if we are still interested by then.

If I'm still interested and unemployed.

Dear said I had better find a job before the next batch of grads come out... omg. Sigh and he told me to go back NTU for the career fair lor. Yixian, go with me? If I'm going, I don't want go back NTU alone to the career fair.

Hunting for a photo-developing shop
Thursday, January 07, 2010

Dragged till yesterday then went to take passport-size photo for the application form. Me fault too, cos wanted to take after the pimple outbreak and rebonding - then will be more recent photo of me mah. Me fault for not checking earlier whether the shop in Limbang is still opened. Made mama accompany but she didn't want to give me an exact time so I hurriedly make-uped and had lunch in half an hour and rushed out with her.

Damn, the photo-developing shop totally closed down liao la. Emptied. I was sulking already cos I was wearing long-sleeve shirt under the afternoon sun :( so we walked to Yew Tee see got what shops lor. I was following mama's footsteps only cos so warm in that shirt and I didn't bring my ezlink card. Went inside Yew Tee Point for the aircon and found a shop at the basement that got photography service. But I'm not impressed with 4pcs for $8 and no basic digital touchup (in case I looked really chui mah).

So we went around to the shops outside to the Yew Tee shopping centre there and tell you ah, there were like 4 salons side by side on one stretch of the shops leh and 2 more on the other stretch. Wanted to find 1 traditional photo-developing shop also so hard hor... bleah so no choice but to walk the same way back. Then vola! I spotted a hidden corner (we won't see it the way we walked in) and vola again, a fujifilm (I think) colour centre. And 4pcs for $6.

Not I hiam one lor, but at the previous place hor didn't have proper corner to take photo one lor, the shopkeeper wanted to just grab a chair and let me sit against the wall leh. At least this one already got the high chair and lightings set up lor... haha so I dived for it lor. Already want to give up by then... waited 20mins for the photos to come out.

And I've pasted 1 piece on the application form le. My hair looks different liao right... haha of cos not as flat as tuesday liao which is good. And I purposely sweep fringe to one side one. Hmmm, hair looks long too. Hope I don't look old =p

Mama also bought a new pair of shoes hehe. Forgot to take pics of her there so came home and took using my feet lol. I feel this pair of heels gives the lady an independent touch and a bit fiery and yet still stylish.

Preparing the drinks and snacks etc. Nice coloured cups for all of us.

See the fireworks live on TV... it's 2010 already! The polaroid photos we took =P

Wearing da tou's cap haha... nurse-look? Oh, and I was just trying out the dress I'll wear tmr to cousin's wedding dinner. Pretty ma?

My self-intro.
Wednesday, December 30, 2009

Good morning ladies and gentlemen, my name is Janice. I've just graduated with a degree from NTU last year.

After graduation, I was a part time teacher at a student care centre. My experience as a teacher taught me to be patient as I have to meet the demands of the parents and also pay attention to the needs of the children.

Prior to this, I've had experience in customer service as a frontline tax officer in IRAS and other vacation jobs in sales and administrative positions.

I also have basic proficiency in Korean Language for which I took up a module when I was studying in NTU.

I enjoy interacting with people and serving others because it is rewarding to know that I've made someone's life a little happier. I'm willing to learn and I believe my qualities and past working experiences have equipped me well for the role of a cabin crew with SIA.

Thank you.

Hmmm, kinda sian diao to read this.
Tuesday, December 29, 2009

I've just resigned from SIA and I have to say, I feel so much happier now that I dont have to fly anymore. Too many reasons why i dislike the job so much but I just have to note something. When I posted the news of my resignation on msn shoutout and facebook, all my crew friends said "Congrats!" and "Lucky girl!"... none of them asked, huh... why? There are definitely perks to flying, but everytime I miss something like the half price dim sum in hkg, the mushroom sauce spinach in frankfurt or the factory outlet shopping in USA, I'll think of all the horrible parts of the job and the pang of missing those stuff disappears.

To me, the high pay and the perks definitely wasnt worth all the pain and anguish of meeting horrible crew and unreasonable passengers and most of all, the way the company treats us. Its like, they dont even see crew as human sometimes. So sad.. so I say, if you want to be a crew, try another airline. Emirates or whatever... this is just my opinion, I know there're some crew who love SIA, I just am not like that, thats all.

What spurs crew to quit? Hmm...

1. SIA culture. This is subjective and I'm not gonna comment becuz alot of ppl have talked about this already anyway. Lets just say I dont like the way management talks down to crew in general and the sometimes unrealistic expectations they have.

2. No team flying. Again, some ppl might prefer this. But I dont like working with different set of colleagues every single time I fly. Once in a while you fly with ppl you work with before and like, but seldom la. So imagine, every time you go into briefing room, its like "Surprise!!" You dont know who you flying with. Of course, some are famous, but not for good reasons, so you see their name on the crew list you sian liao.

3. No regular customers. Around the same reason as no team flying. Sure I like meeting new ppl.. but every single time? I like to see some familiar faces lah.

4. "Never say no, always offer alternatives" You try that on a shanghai flt, where every single pax wants their hugeass coat hung up in the closet and you've already double hung 2 coats on one hanger and the closet is completely full. Biz class closet also full, they tell you, dont use ah... So now, you tell passenger what? Sir/Mdm, please put on top the overhead compartment. They tell you, dont want... later squashed. You coax them.. please la.. tolong la.... let me put for you la... dont angry la.... times 20 pax. boarding time - 20min. You try loh. Never say no. *snorts.

5. Its like being in army... dont ask qns, dont explain when they say you do this wrong, you explain means u bad attitude. blah blah.

6. The red nail polish... the blue eyeshadow... the ridiculously hairsprayed into a unbeatable, unshakeable bun/frenchtwist/helmet-like bob.

That's why they are called singapore girls, and the army ppl are called the singapore boys??

Feel so encouraged!

Go for it ladies! I've been flying for 5 years and have no plans to quit any time in the near future.

After 5 yrs of service which is equivalent to 1 contract, you get a gratuity of $15,000. Which job will give you that?

After joining the airline, I can contribute so much more financially towards my family and enjoy a better lifestyle. You can save alot, provided you don't buy branded goods like LV, Gucci etc.

After 5 yrs, I have saved very close to 100k, including yearly bonuses. Wd you believe me? I am using it for downpayment for a condominium unit in the east.

The job may have its many horrible moments with crew or passengers, but won't you agree with me that every job has its politics too? Office workers, cleaners, cashiers, hotel staff, taxi drivers, even family businesses have their own politics.

You just have to be able to take things easy and be very patient when you meet such horrible people. It isn't all that bad. I was surprised to have met and still are meeting very, very nice crew and passengers in my daily course of work. Even if we do meet horrible crew or passengers, it's only that 1 chance or 1 flt. Because every flt we work with different crew and meet different passengers, working life gets really interesting.

I have never thought of joining SQ before but after thinking abt how the $ could help improve my family's life, I gave it a try and got in at my first try.

Go for it girls. You do not live to regret the things you did in life, but it is what you did not do that you would regret later on in your life.

You do not need to be gorgeous to join the airline industry, just as long as you have a genuine smile and would readily help someone in need unconditionally, you stand a chance to be part of a cabin crew of any airline. Only SQ bothers so much abt height and scars.

And if you think being a flt stewardess isn't a lifelong career, you can make it a lifelong career if you choose to. We have many flying mothers. You take a break of 2 yrs once you are pregnant to give birth and rest. After that 2 yr period, you can return to flying and continue where you left off. And if you are worried abt being away from your family and child for long periods of time, our rosters are actually very flexible! We can change away our long flts easily. And we have so many offdays that we can actually spend quality time with our child as compared to a 9-5 office job where you only get home at 7pm and sleep by 11pm. That leaves you with only 4hrs for dinner, housework, kids' homework and nothing else.

I myself am a married woman and my husband works shifts even but we have no problems whatsoever with spending our days apart. In fact, the time away from him recharges me and when I do get back to S'pore, our relationship improves as we make the effort to make sure the time we have together is quality-time.

I promise you that flying would enrich your life experiences, exposing you to the world at large and makes you a more broad-minded person. It is also a very humbling job because you meet and see many different people in many behavioural stages and you will realise that you are just an entity from a small resources-scarce island called S'pore which regrettably happens to be home to some hoity-toity noobs who look down on foreign workers and would not allow dormitories to be built in Serangoon Gardens.

Onboard, it is interesting to be able to see how a Jew prays, what a Kosher meal looks like, how heartwarming to see an Indian travelling with his entourage of extended family, how Kurdish sounds like, how a jain meal looks like, how a French couple communicates with their adopted Vietnamese kids, how an Icelandic man looks like, how ugly the super rich and famous can behave, how sad it is to see an ailing person onboard with a medical team and equipment being transported to another destination, how passengers pay for extra seats to strap on their gold bars, how a whole plane of Muslims on pilgrimage look like.....and these are just interesting and eye-opening scenes onboard the plane, I haven't got started on the fulfilling experiences outstations!

I urge every girl who is interested to become a cabin crew but lack self-confidence, to give it another try. You will never know if you have never tried.

Just don't turn into a materialistic person and forget your roots becos that is just plain stupidity.
